Is Mark Cuban Spending Smart Money On Raef LaFrentz?
I have been down on Raef LaFrentz. I didn't think he deserved a max contract for 90 million dollars. I'm glad to see Mark Cuban doesn't either. Cuban is doing a smart thing with Raef, he'll give him a salary that is worthy of his play. If the guy really wanted to get a fat payday he would have balled his butt off in the playoffs like Mike Bibby.
After signing Shawn Bradley and Evan Eschmeyer to contracts totally 49 million and seeing zero production that mattered in the playoffs, Cuban is spending smart from now on.
The Mavs LaFrentz will get a 7 year 60 million dollar contract. His salary for the 2002-2003 season will be 7 million. That is fair. The kid has talent, but he is too inconsistent for my taste.
Raef is young and maybe he will develop a more consistent game this season. The Mavericks are talking about putting him at the power forward slot and moving Dirk to the small forward position. LaFrentz is a 4 so he'll be pleased.
Thank goodness Cuban used common sense. Raef is not a max guy. Raef is not a go to player. Too many owners have given max money to players that are not difference makers. Portland's Damon Stoudamire, New Jersey's Keith Van Horn, Vin Baker in Milwaukee, and Stephon Marbury in Phoenix come to my mind.
The other appealing part of this contract is Raef can be traded. This contract allows the Mavericks to move him IF they want to in the future. It will not kill another teams cap and the money Raef will make is fair.
