Crazy Juan, My Mock Top 5 Draft, Orel Cut, and The Class of ' 96
Juan Confusing Dude -------------------
What does Juan Gonzalez want? I don't get how a man can play games with money the way he does.
How many times does a player get an offer to make 140 million dollars from their employer. Yes, Detroit is not the ideal place to play baseball, but for 17 & half million I bet you could do it.
Juan turned down a possible trade to the World Champion New York Yankees. Let me get this right. He doesn't want the long green from a loser. He doesn't want to play for a team that has won 3 of the last 4 World Series. Now I know why he has been married four times.
NBA Draft ---------
The NBA Draft is Wednesday and let me tell ya. It is a real crapshoot. I really love Darius Miles. The high school kid out of East St. Louis. He can play. It will take 3 years to get him on track to All Star status, but it will be worth it.
Having seen Kobe Bryant up close for four years, I'll tell ya this. There is no substitute for raw talent.
The only thing teams should do is find out everything possible about Miles as a person. You want to know about his family. A team should want him to talk with a doctor about what makes him tick.
The Dallas Mavericks messed up last year taking high schooler Leon Smith. They never worked the kid out and they didn't interview him. You can not sink millions into a high school player without due dilligence. Don Nelson admitted that very fact to me today.
Newdawg's Top 5 Picks ---------------------
1. Kenyon Martin-New Jersey
Rod Thorn is running the show now. You might remember his last number one draft pick. Michael Jordan in 1984. The Nets gotta play it safe and get a productive guy. Martin can do that. Plus, Jayson Williams might retire.
2. Stromile Swift-Vancouver
The sophomore from LSU has mad game. He's young, but I love a frontline of 6-9 Swift, 6-9 Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and 7-foot stiff center, Byrant Reeves. Swift will take time and he's a country kid so good luck getting him used to the snow of Canada.
3. Darius Miles-LA Clippers
GM Elgin Baylor knows talent. They just hate playing there. Miles along with Lamar Odom make a serious combo. How would you guard them. Yes, the are both small forwards, but that doesn't matter.
Odom and Miles are two racehorses that can cause matchup problems all day long. Take the best player. Odom is only 20 years old so you could build something.
4. Chris Mihm-Chicago
So, GM Jerry Krause doesn't get his next Pippen in Miles but he gets a decent center. He'd take Miles first if he feel to the four spot.
5. Marcus Fizer-Orlando
A lot of people are saying the Clippers will deal the 3rd pick to the Magic for there 5th and 10th overall. Big mistake. Don't take the numbers, take the best player. The best player is Miles.
The 1996 Draft -------------- They say it might take four years to completely evaulate a draft. Let's take a quick look back to the Class of ' 96.
Allen Iverson was legit as the top overall pick. Marcus Camby went #2 to the Raptors. They messed up because Shareef Abdur-Rahim went next to Vancouver.
The screws up started happening at 7. The Clips took Lorenzen Wright. He signed a 42 million dollar deal with Atlanta last year and sat on the bench.
The Nets tried to play it safe with Kerry Kittle at 8. Then head coach, John Calipari wanted to take Kobe Bryant. He's still in Jersey...labled as a soft player.
At 9, Dallas grabbed Samaki Walker from Louisvill. What a bust. He's in San Antonio stealing money now.
Erick Dampier was taken by the Pacers at 10. Stiff! He's thieving in...well who cares.
Cleveland bet on Vitaly Potapenko. A 6-10 center who's nothing special in Boston now.
The smart team was Charlotte. They picked Kobe Bryant. Then traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac. In the end, Jerry West and the Lakers made out like bandits.
Orel Waived In LA -----------------
Hearing the Dodgers cut Orel Hershiser hurt. You should never have to waive one of your all time great. The Bulldog helped carry the Dodgers to the 1988 World Series. He was fantastic. I hate to see a guy like that pushed out.
