NewDawg Is Back In Texas
April 18, 2000
Finally, the Newdawg has come back to Texas!
I got it good tonight, the Lakers are coming to town and my new station, KXAS-TV (NBC5). It will be nice to see Shaq one more time before he heads off for his first NBA title.
I gotta tell ya, I'm loving this Texas life again. It's the third time I've lived here in the state. Dallas is the best place to be a sportscaster.
Last night the Rangers gave up a win to the Yankees. The Ballpark in Arlington was electric. The fans were really into the game. The atmosphere just kills Edison Field in Orange County, California.
But John Wetteland was a gas can and just cost the Rangers their second straight win. Darren Oliver pitched a no hitter through 6 1/3 innings.
After the game, Wetteland was a stand up guy and answered all the questions. Reporters in Dallas seemed to be afraid of this guy. They say Wetteland can be a jerk if you ask the wrong thing.
Hey, I've covered Albert Belle and Kevin Brown. I'll be just fine talking with Wetteland. Just make sure you ask a legit game related question and it's all good.
Now manager, Johnny Oates, is testy son of a gun. Talk about defensive!
I asked him why he didn't leave Oliver in to start the ninth. He got all testy and started in some diatribe about Wetteland being one of the games all time best closers.
You let Oliver have a chance for the complete game and if he let sone or two baserunners get on, then bring your ace reliver outta the pen. Oliver only threw 98 pitches.
That's one problem I have with todays brand of baseball. Let guys pitch for goodness gracious. The Rangers paid big bucks for Oliver, let the guy earn them. Instead, Wetteland faces six Yankees, gives up three hits, and the game tying run.
