For All The Tech Fans

I got Red Raider fans mad because I said they didn't belong in a bowl game. I stand by that and I'll give you my take.

1. Didn't Beat A Winning Team

Sure, the Red Raiders won 7 games. Not one of those victories came against a club with a winning record. I'm sorry I think a bowl team should beat SOMEBODY. Check out these gladiator wins and the records the teams finished with.

North Texas 3-8, Kansas 4-7, La-Lafayette 1-10, Baylor 2-9, Utah St. 5-6, New Mexico 5-7, and Oklahoma State 3-8.

Tech beat North Texas barely, 6 points. Kansas got beat by SMU. Oklahoma State ended up firing their head coach. I don't think it much to ask a bowl team to beat somebody with a winning record. Tech had it's chance in the Galleryfuniture.com Bowl.

2. Awful Conference Record

Tech was 3-5 in the Big 12. They finished in 7th place. Look at it another way, the NCAA basketball tournament has 64 teams. The committee would never invite a team with a losing conference record and the finished in 7th place.

Now I'm not just picking on the Red Raiders. Arkansas went 3-5 in the SEC and finished in 9th place! These guys went to the Las Vegas Bowl and got beat by UNLV. Two years ago UNLV had just one victory. I don't think UCLA should be in the Sun Bowl. I think it is a joke West Viginia, another team with a losing conference record is in a bowl game. Yet, they are playing in the Music City Bowl.

3. The Galleryfurniture.com Bowl

Just look at the result of the bowl game 40-27. Tech got beat handily by Conference USA's 2nd place team. It was 34-0 before Tech got into the end zone. East Carolina had 481 yards of total offense. Check out ESPN.com. A few Tech fans were squawking how bad they would beat a little team from Conference USA. Opps!

4. I Wasn't The Only One

Even ESPN.com said Tech and a few other teams shouldn't have been in bowls games.

Now I also said that we have far too many bowl games. 25 bowls is crazy! It's not special anymore.

Conferences have so many affiliations with bowls that fans go to the same bowl city two or three times in just four or five years. An example is Kansas State. They played in the Cotton Bowl two years ago and they didn't bring the same number of fans to Dallas for this year's game.

Clemson has had the same problems a few years ago because all Tommy West could do was finish in third place in the ACC. That meant a trip to the Peach Bowl. Three trips in five years soured the fans on going down to Atlanta.

That's my take on it all. You may not agree. But I presented facts behind my opinion.
