My 10 Takes on what the Cowboys need to do since they missed the playoffs

The day after the Cowboys got beat up 31-14 to the Giants to lose the NFC East title and any shot to get into the playoffs I offer these ten nuggets.

1. Norv Turner ain't walking through that door

Too many Cowboy fans think Jason Garrett is going to give up his playcalling duties and let his old coach Norv Turner come in and be the offensive coordinator.

Jason won't do it. Scoring isn't exactly the Cowboys problem and Garrett said he wanted to call his own plays when he was named the head coach. Sean Payton does it in New Orleans, Mike McCarthy calls his Packers plays. Bill Walsh did, Tom Landry did it. Garrett is not in their class right now but I see his point.

History reminder here, when Turner was up for the head coaching job that eventually went to Wade Phillips, Turner told Cowboys owner Jerry Jones Garrett wasn't ready to call the plays. Jones hired Garrett before hiring the head coach and promised he would be able to call the plays. Now do you really think Norv is walking through the Valley Ranch doors now?

2. My solution to not having Norv is.....

The team is always trying to upgrade the roster when it comes to talent. Why should assistant coaches be treated any differently? The Miami Dolphins fired Tony Sparano so I say go bring him back. He was around when the club was 13-3 in 2007. Tony worked with Jason and the team was doing some good things on offense.

 3. Dave Campo, Joe Decamilis and Hudson Houck

Campo is the defensive backs coach. His contract is up and he will not be back. The Cowboys secondary was trash in 2011.

Decamilis is the special teams coach. I think his time is up. Anybody happy with his work the last two seasons?

Houck is like family to Garrett. I always like to quote the slimy agent Bob Sugar in the movie Jerry Maguire when he says, "It's not show friends, it's show business". Houck's the offensive line coach.

They played a lot of different young guys there this year. Left tackle Doug Free got paid big dollars and promptly had a bad season. The offensive line is a problem area.

 4. Trade Wide Receiver Dez Bryant??

Why not think about dealing Bryant if you can get a high 2nd round pick. It's clear he still has off the field issues with money and more importantly he still hasn't grasped the playbook. Romo is still telling Dez what routes to run as he breaks the huddle. Go watch the NFL Films soundtrack of the Bucs game.

Garrett wants a smart football player. Dez is talented but the people I talk to question how dedicated he is to getting better. If he doesn't fit the mold of what the head coach wants the Cowboys may come out better off trading him. Look at what Belichick did when he decided it was time to move on from Randy Moss in New England. They didn't replace his talent because Moss is a hall of famer but they got guys who bought into the program and they continue to win the AFC East.

And Dez just signed on with agent Drew Rosenhaus. It's a matter of time before they come looking for an extention. Would you be willing to give Dez Bryant big money right now?

 5. Keep Rob Ryan as the DC

Yeah, I said it. Keep loudmouth Rob Ryan on the payroll and let him have an entire offseason to implement his defense. The NFL lockout did not allow that to happen in 2011. I don't know why Cowboy fans forget that.

As the defensive coordinator, Ryan's club had issues. Is it all on his D? Look at some of the Cowboys losses and I say his defense did enough in the following games: Jets (Romo lost that one) Lions (another Romo 4th quarter screw up) and the Cardinals (Garrett iced his on own FG kicker).

Anybody see a lot of difference makers on that defense outside of Demarcus Ware, Sean Lee and Jay Ratiff?

The Cowboys secondary needs an overhaul. Name the last big time defensive end to play for Dallas since they switched to the 3-4?

Let Ryan get his own secondary coach and give him talent then we can fairly judge him.

6. Goodbye to Terence Newman & Anthony Spencer

I can't name two bigger disappointments on the Cowboys than these two. LT Doug Free comes on the medal stand to finish third. Newman was a guy they tried to replace in free agency but it didn't work out. The 50 million dollar corner was paid as an elite player but he never really was. He had a good career in Dallas but he never became a great player. In 2011 Newman fell off the cliff. We saw issues in 2010. Now it is clear, #41 is done.

Spencer is just a classic bust. Will a guy ever get it any easier to make sacks when playing on the opposite side of Demarcus Ware? Spencer couldn't beat the single coverages to become an elite sack man. He racks up dumb penalties and it's time to let him walk away since his contract is up. If you won't even ball out in your contract year why should he be offered a new deal?

7. Free Marty B

Backup tight end Martellus Bennett is a free agent. Somebody clean out his locker. He was more known more for his off the field endeavors than anything he ever did on it.

Bennett told a reporter he thinks he can start in the NFL and is tired of backing up a future hall of famer. I want to see the team that decides to give him starting job because Marty B hasn't caught a touchdown pass in three seasons. In his four years in Dallas three times he caught 20 passes or less in a season.

I think he sold more Rock it Dope T-shirts than he ever caught passes.

8. The QB is not the issue

The Cowboys have so many problems to address it ain't funny. Replacing the QB isn't one of them. Romo isn't Brady, Brees, Rodgers but who is?

Is he as good as Jay Cutler and Philp Rivers? I say yes.

When Demarco Murray was healthy we saw what a great run Romo was on. Fix the offensive line and get Murray healthy and I like Romo's chances to take the Cowboys back to the playoffs.

9. Let Jon Kitna go

Kitna ended the season on the injure reserve list. Dude's almost 40. Thank him for his service and move on. Is Stephen McGee ready to be elevated to the backup for the Cowboys? I don't think we have enough body of work but this offseason they need to find out. If they use a midround draft selection on Boise State signal caller Kellen Moore I wouldn't complain.

10. These guys will not be on the roster in 2012

Keith Brooking, Abe Elam, Terence Newman, Montrae Holland, Kevin Ogletree, Jon Kitna, Bradie James, Marty B, Alan Ball, Barry Church and Anthony Spencer.

Some of these players are free agents, some are now overpaid, some are too old.

I think Sparano is a very good football coach. The mess that is Miami isn't all his fault. Bill Parcells decided to draft a left tackle with the first pick in the 2008 draft instead of taking franchise quarterback Matt Ryan. Parcells gave him Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Pat White, and Matt Moore to work with as quarterbacks. Now you see why Sprano is unemployed, you try and beat Bill Belichick and Tom Brady with those guys twice a year.

He served as the tight ends coach, offensive line coach and run game coordinator in Dallas. Cowboys play by play voice Brad Sham accuses me of calling Sparano Garrett's "brain". If the shoe fits...
