Q)
Newy, you know what is really going on. Jerry told Jason he will be head coach in one or two years. Just be patient. Jason will wait because he can sign a five year deal and coach the “good cowboys” or the “sorry” Falcons. Another factor-who has the best stadium in two years? DALLAS . Who wants to live in Baltimore ? Jerry is crazy to let Jason go.

If that was the case, it would be out. No way you can keep a promise like that a secret.
To do that would undercut Wade Phillips. Now why would Jerry want to do that.
Jason would be crazy to let a head coaching opportunity go, if it is offered to him.

Slip up? Recently, in your NBC5 6pm news cast, covering Missouri's win in the Cotton Bowl, you stated that Missouri was the "Big 12 Champions". Tell me you didn't mean that, otherwise you might have some angry okies.

The way OU got drilled against the West Virginia, the Big 12 North Champs did a lot better job of repping the conference.

Q)
Really? TCU should keep Patterson?
Really? 9 bowl games in 10 years is good but what bowls they were?
Really? Are the Poinsettia Bowl, the Houston Bowl and the Mobile (Alabama) Bowl the kinds of bowls great athletic programs would boast about?
Really? I left out the Fort Worth Bowl? Isn't counting that like saying your daughter was prom queen when you took her because no one else would?
This year the Frogs under achieved and, heck, the year before they lost to freaking SMU! So, really Newy...keep Patterson?

Tim,
I don't understand how you can argue with what bowl games TCU is going to. The conferences pretty much dictate where a team goes. The Mountain West winner will not be playing in a New Year's Day Bowl.
BYU won the league this year and they play in the Las Vegas Bowl December 22nd.
TCU is not at fault for what you perceive as lackluster bowl games.
If they go undefeated, they would have a chance at a major bowl game, but we know it's very hard for any team to run the table.
I also think you are being unfair to say this team underachieved when it's started a quarterback who never took a college snap and they had consistent injuries across the board at running back.
His best defensive player was in and out of the lineup all year with a medical condition.
The loss at Air Force was bad. They lost at Wyoming by 3. Lost Utah by 7 and at BYU by 4.
Do they get any credit for being Stanford in Palo Alto one week after the Cardinal knocked of #2 ranked USC?
I'll ask you this. Who would do a better job at TCU than Gary Patterson has? Let me know how can come in and win ten plus games in seven years like he has.

Newy: Why is it that no one will recognize the Cowboys defensive effort on MNF? The defense only allowed three points. People will dwell on Romo's poor performance but I think it's important to remember that defense wins championships and, in this case, defense won the game too. The Bills offense was ineffective (3 pts) and that is the principal reason for their demise on MNF.

You made some tremendous points. The defense kept the Cowboys alive and they won the game along with Nick Folk's clutch field goals.

Newy: Great column today! I have been wondering--every time I see or hear someone taking for granted that the Cowboys obviously are going to win it all this year--why someone doesn't remind us--and it would have fitted in your column today-- REMEMBER HOW THE DALLAS MAVERICKS 2006-07 SEASON ENDED! Yep; they were going to win it all; done deal; no question. Even in their initial assessment/predictions of the playoff matchups, no less than Sports Illustrated intoned that no one could beat the Dallas Mavericks.
How soon we forget!
Thanks for a good read.

Thank you Anna.
The Bengals thought they would get an easy win over Cleveland after beating Baltimore in the season opener and they got beat.
The Cowboys have to be ready for St. Louis.

Q)
Play one game at a time?
Don't look past the Rams??
Damn boy,....you are living in the past!
THIS Cowboys team will win this game by 17 points and beat the Bills by 20.
This is NOT the Cowboys of the past.(I'm talking past 20 years)

Go back to last season. The club was 8-4 and limped home at 9-7 and got beat in the first round of the playoffs.
They got drilled by the Saints and Lions at Texas Stadium.
Do you realize the Cowboys only beat one team with a winning record last year, the Colts?
All I can go by is what I have seen from the this team since 2000. Which means they have to go out and prove they are worthy of all the hype.

Newy,
Agreed the Fitzgerald would be a great pick up, but I am beginning to
be concerned about next years salary cap what with Romo set to eat
a big chunk of it and 2 first round draft choices coming up.
I know the boys are under the cap now but a lot of contracts coming up
plus some guys who need extensions, Like Barber and Colombo.
I have to think Julius and Flo are gone because the boys just
want have enough money to go around and I wouldn't be at all
surprised if Jason Ferguson and Terry Glenn become a salary cap victims if Tank
works out and Crayton and Hurd continue to impress, and especially if they have
any thoughts of bringing in a Fitzgerald.
Jerry will probably parlay the 2-first rounders into one high pick for McFadden,
but then you gotta pay that guy big bucks.
Am I wrong are is the salary cap a potentially large problem in 2008.

Great thoughts on this Larry.
The Cowboys are 12 million under the cap. I would not worry about the Cowboys finding ways to fit them in. Stephen Jones learned his lesson from the late 90's and early 2000's about how a bad cap situation can doom your team.
Jerry Jones has said in the past he has no problems writing the check for Romo.
I would be shocked if the Cowboys gave up 2 first round picks to take running back Darren McFadden of Arkansas. He is a special talent, but two first round picks would be very steep. It will be interesting to watch. I know they like the player. Just hope Cleveland is so bad the don't have to make that choice.
All of this will be interesting to watch.

Mr. Scruggs, enjoyed reading your article in the Saturday September 22nd sports edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Bring on that "playin with character and dignity" thing, Coach Phillips. It can happen, no matter who's on the team. But make sure that Mr. Jones returns to the Super Bowl along the way.

Win and you can have a roster of felons. Cowboy fans just want Super Bowl wins.
