Q) I want to go on record before the game with LA saying that what happens from here does not matter. If the Mavericks lose, it will be good. If they win, it will be good. "It's all good." The Mavericks are not going to win the NBA title regardless of their seeding in the playoffs. I don't think anyone believes that they are good enough to beat LA or Sacramento in 7 games, and the Spurs would be viewed at best as a push. The Mavericks are on the road to being a championship team, and this entire season is just a building block. Consider history. Shaq showed up in LA in 1996. They won their first championship 4 years later (but 8 years into his career). Michael Jordan entered the league in 1984. The Bulls win their first championship in 1990/91 season. 7 years into his career. Isiah Thomas arrived in Detroit in 1981. The Pistons win the world title in 1989 (8 years later). Noticing a trend? Frank Luksa's column a couple of days ago closed with a great point. If anything, Don Nelson has this team overachieving. The Keon Clark mistake not withstanding, the Nelsons have done an amazing job of turning the perennial laughing stock into a dangerous contender that is a blast to watch. Dirk is in his third season. Even if we are two years from a championship, that would put us 2 years ahead of the timetable that Jordan achieved with the Bulls. Take your finger off the panic button Dallas. This is going to be a fun ride, and this team is going to be good for a long time. Scott in Coyote Ridge

A) Let's look at the additions the Pistons and Bulls made.

It's called DEFENSE!!!!

So until the Nelsons give the Mavericks a rebounder instead of Antoine Rigaudeau or stiff Popeye Jones save the "Keep Hope Alive" emails.

It took Hakeem Olajuwon ten years to win his first. Clyde Drexler needed a trade and still had to wait 12 years. Tim Duncan got his in two years while teammate David Robinson had to wait ten.

Karl Malone and John Stockton are still waiting for a title. Patrick Ewing never got the ring. Charles Barkley retired without a taste of the bubbly. Dominique Wilkins
never got to the promised land.

You can't put a timetable on winning a ring.

Q) Hey, Dawg... What do you think the Mavericks' chances of getting into the 2nd round of the playoffs are if and when they fall to the number 3 spot in the West? It will be quite ugly if the Lakers get the number 6 spot and we (Mavericks) get the number 3 spot. I'm a Mavericks fan wholeheartedly.. loved them since the franchise came here... But I think they're scared of the Lakers and Kings. What do you think? Keep up the great work.

 --wilsontke@hotmail.com

A) The Mavericks do not have the rebounding to beat the Kings or the Lakers in a seven game playoff series.

The Mavericks went for offense and never got around to bringing in defensive players for the 2002-03 team.

The Mavs will have a hard time shooting 50% from the field, which they need to do, to beat these clubs. We already know they can't rebound with them.

They say, "defense wins championships" for a reason. Because it is true.

Q) Hi, Newy: My husband & I just finished watching sports coverage this Sunday evening...We just wanted to say we SOOOOOOOO enjoy you and your lively personality. You are an absolute JOY to listen to. After the Don Nelson "new commercial" preview, (which we thought was absolutely hilarious), my husband said "I don't know what they paid to get Newy, but it was a bargain whatever it was"!! I agree!! You are an absolute JOY!! And that's coming from a "not too sports minded" female & her "very sports minded" husband. Thanks for being YOU and for allowing us the privilege to watch! Have a GREAT week! In Him, Debbie and Cliff Whatley

A) Wow!!

That was a very kind email. I am humbled.

Thanks a bunch.

Q) Hey Newy I listen to you everyday on ESPN 103.3's the BIG SHOW!! You and Chuck run an awesome show each and everyday. But most of all, you display what a sports broadcaster is all about! You make the show awesome. Keep up the good work with ESPN and NBC 5!!! Jeff Lewisville, TX

A) Thanks...it's nice to get a friendly email once and a while.

Q) Newy, I'm very disappointed in the way you cover the Rangers. I know it is still spring training, but I feel like the team deserves more than a 30 second put down. If it was the Cowboys camp you would be right there the whole way. Last night you were really hard on them as usual, saying that even though they still can't pitch they managed to win the game. Even though you apparently don't like baseball you owe it to the listeners that do to cover the game and keep negative comments to yourself. I look forward to hearing facts on the team, not your personal opinions. Patty Lovgren

 --tommie.taylor.h70w@statefarm.com

A) Just tell me when it's not true!

What I said about the Rangers pitching staff is true.

I was hired to give my opinions. Deep down you don't want some bland boring guy giving you the sports. You want the Newdawg's take.

By the way, my wife thinks I'm too hard on the Rangers too!!

Q) Newy, Help me understand why everybody is giving Chris Simms such a hard time with the upcoming draft. He is 6'4, 222 pounds. Doesn't he have a strong arm and decent speed? What else can you ask for. I know that people say a lot about him not winning the big game but how many quarterbacks have we seen that won a lot of big college games but didn't do anything in the NFL? Eric Couch is one, Major Applewhite, Michael Bishop, Josh Heupel, Zebbie Letheridge, and James Brown. I am sure if I go back a few years we would have a lot more. Is that how scouts and GM's rate quarterbacks? I hope that he comes out and contributes right away so that people will understand that it doesn't matter what you do in college but that you are prepared through your college experience for the next level. Preparation is key not the wins or loses. What do you think? Thanks for your time and have a great afternoon. Buck

 --ldavidson@londonamericantx.com

A) Buck,

I wouldn't touch Chris Simms with a 1st round draft pick.

Simms has all the things you want in a QB. Tall, nice arm, he works hard and he is a team player. His 40 yard dash was around 4.7, and that is good.

Zero touchdown passes, 14 interceptions, in games against top 10 teams. I'm sorry Buck, but that's where the kid losses me.

The Cowboys drafted a guy like Roy Williams for his big plays at OU. The Lions took Joey Harrington because he was a big time comeback QB at Oregon. Houston made David Carr the top pick because he put Fresno State on the college football map.

As one NFL coach once told me, "If you can't do it in college, you won't do it up here (NFL)."

He's a guy I wouldn't draft until the 3rd round. He's not a finished product.

Look for him to be taken in the 2nd though.

Q) The great thing about America is you have a "right" to be an idiot. Steve Nash is ignorant about this subject, that is why no one wants to hear from him. He is a Canadian making millions of American dollars to play basketball, not dump on our policies. He keeps saying he is against violence, well who is for violence Steve?????? I am in complete support of the war, but also against violence. Let me tell you the violence I am against; the mass murders of Saddam Hussein, the violence of 9/11, the violence of a weapon of mass destruction being dropped in downtown Dallas. The reason we entered WWII was to stop violence, the violence of Hiltler. Wake up Steve and learn some history. Mike in Plano

A) Wow....Mike you and CBC Hockey guru Don Cherry need to go throw down some beers together.

Heartfelt message from ya.

I love the passion!!

Q) Newy, While I agree with you that Chan Ho Park is really off to a bad start, he did not give up the home run to the first batter, it was the third. And could you at least try to conceal your obvious dislike for all of the local pro teams. Not everyone thinks L.A. is better. It really gets old watching you favor the California teams. Steve

 --mike kilpatrick, irving, TX

A) Steve,

Chan Ho Park is bad. I'm just telling it like it is.

I did say, "1st inning...Edgar Martinez Home Run. 3rd batter of the game". I just checked the tape.

I'm a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. I have been since I was a kid.

I buy season tickets to the Mavericks. I've owned them for 3 years and I love what Mark Cuban has done turning the franchise around.

I'm not wrong pointing out the fact they haven't beaten the Lakers since 1990. That's not showing "California Love". That's pointing out a fact and considering the Mavericks are a half game ahead of the Spurs it doesn't look good for them.

I bought Texas Rangers season tickets 2 years ago and I don't think that was money well spent.

The Stars are great. The have a great goalie in Marty Turco and that coach the got from the Kings, is good too. I think they'll win the Cup.

It's not my job to bring pom-poms to the set and cheer for all the local teams.

Thanks for watching Steve.
