Q) Just read and reread this article about Turner Gill not getting the Auburn coaching job. First, let me say that I was surprised they gave the job to Chizik. Second, I'm from Nebraska, a long time Big Red fan and have followed Gill's career. BUT.....shame on you for not inquiring if Gill maybe turned down the job!! Coming off a great season at Buffalo with a nice, fat contract extension waiting in the wings? But no, you took the opportunity to play "the race card". Also, you threw in a Bush bash? Lastly, I'm tired of hearing that there is not enough black coaches, dah, maybe we should implement "Affirmative Action" and give black coaches automatic "plus" ratings over white ones. Would you want that as a black coach, I don't think so. I'm also tired of hearing about not enough black golfers on the PGA Tour. How do we solve that, or is that the white man's fault, too? Okay, I feel better now. Ken Aldridge of Grand Prairie

 -- KAldridge@aol.com

A) Let's see Ken, you can't turn down something that was never offered to you.

Turner Gill was never offered the Auburn football job. If you had read anything about the situation you would know that.

Thanks for allow all your feelings about black golfers to come out too. I have no clue where that came from since my column was only about football coaches.

Q) I have been a fan and follower of yours since you came to DFW with channel 5. I respect your views and intelligent commentary. I agree with your observation in this morning’s article. But, Newy, your political comment was out of line. If you want to write a political column, then get on the same page as Bob Ray Sanders. Brewer Newton

 --brewernewton@ymail.com

A) Brewer,

My comment was true. George W. Bush has the lowest approval rating of any president. That would mean people think he is NOT doing a good job.

Politics and sports have always mixed. The Olympics, the integration of sports are few examples of how politics and sports go hand in hand.

Q) Come on, Newy, did you really have to mention Turner's wife? What does that have to do with anything. Ok, maybe it matters at Auburn, but honestly most people (I did not say all) don't care. Let's not bring people's family into these things. I knew Turner Gill, not well, but I knew him. I went to Pascal and played summer league baseball with him and football against him. He was always a class act. Don't worry, he will do well. I believe God has a purpose for all of us. Auburn was not the best place for him. Turner Gill is not the only person (coach, media person, engineer, TV technician, whatever) in this world that has not gotten what he deserves. He will do just as those people do. Keep plugging away, doing the right thing, and know that their chance will come. It will come, but he (and those folks) need to be ready and not miss it while focusing on a wagon full of "Poor Me." I am a Texas Tech graduate. I hope we keep Mike Leach, but if we don't I was hoping for Art Briles (not because he's white, but because I saw him at TTU and he's good), but he's now at Baylor and I don't support stealing coaches from within the conference. So my next wish is Turner Gill (not because he's black, but because I "know him" and he's good.). Three years from now Chitzik will be fired and Gill will be in his second season at mid-range school in a top conference. He'll be turning heads the same way that Briles did this year at Baylor. Iowa State should hire Gill! I guarantee you his record will be better after 2 years that Chitzik even though he will have to play the big boys of the south. Unfortunately, I'm not a big money booster, so what I want won't matter. But that's OK, Turner will do well. Just be patient and watch. Mirick Cox now of Houston (but don't like it - bring me back to Fort Worth any day....)

 --biersnob@live.com

A) Now I like to think most people read the news.

I'm wrong.

One of the big reasons that was debated about Gill not getting the job was because his wife is white and it made certain people in Auburn "uncomfortable".

If you get a chance read some of the articles written about it. It was all over ESPN as well.

Q) Let's get the details out of the way first- 1)It's a slow sports week devoid of any sports stories to talk about. 2)You gotta sell papers, so the pressure is on you guys to blow something out of proportion so you have something to write about. 3)Where to look, how about the most popular sports franchise in the world. 4)What to write...well, it's gotta be negative, cause that sells papers. Okay...groundwork set! First Newy-- T.O. wants the team to be successful and he thinks getting him the ball is a good way for that to happen and T.O. says so. Newy takes that and blows it up by saying that means that T.O. is not a team player and it is all about him. He goes on to spew half truths and negative opinions for a whole column based on that one statement. Newy comes to the conclusion that 'me is more important than we'. Anyone who has played team sports understands what T.O. is saying and it is NOT 'me is more important than me'. Rather it is just the opposite: in order for the team to be successful, he needs to see the ball more. Newy, why not focus on Owens statements that are backed up by simple statistics that the Cowboys ARE more successful when Owens gets the ball more? Too lazy to get into facts when innuendo and uninformed opinions are much easier?

 --d.wright9@charter.net

A) Blame the messenger.

T.O. is getting the ball. 33 TD's since he and Romo have been hooking up since 2006 is tops in the NFL.

You can't make some people happy. He wasn't happy in San Fran, Philly, and guess who's not happy again in Dallas.

You don't win Super Bowls running an offense through a wide receiver. T.O. had a big game in the Super Bowl for Philly and they still lost against New England. It's a team game.

T.O. is a Hall of Fame talent, but it can't be about him all 16 games.

Thanks for reading.

Q) Great column this morning, Newy. Perfect tone and great points. I taught elementary school for 15 years, so I can definitely support your assertion that this is all child-like and childish behavior. I'm a Steelers fan living in Fort Worth, so after three and a half stressful quarters last Sunday I've been loving every minute of the aftermath of the Cowboys' loss this week. I do hope they beat the Giants though. If I was coaching the Giants secondary, I'd triple cover T.O. on the first Cowboys offensive play because you know that first pass is designed for him. And when Romo sees the coverage (maybe) and checks down to Witten I can't wait for the sulking to begin. Ah, what great theater! Have a good weekend. Andy

 --andymckenzie@mac.com

A) Thanks for the email Andy!

I do think they can win on Sunday...the season is on the line.

Q) Maybe it’s time for you to know the background of racism at UT. Obviously you did not see the recent motion picture, The Express, about Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman trophy. Although he won the MPV at the 1959 Cotton Bow game, he was unable to attend the award ceremony as it was at an all-white country club. Mr. Davis was also the subject of racist taunts from the UT players. Also, you need to print the exact apology from the Texas player on his internet site. Read it carefully, and it reflects somebody who needs to attend more English classes. The punctuation, misspelling and grammatical errors are obvious. Apparently this guy was not on the Honor Roll. UT was the last team in the Southwestern Conference to recruit African American players. Under Darrel Royal , UT only began to recruit black players when it was being beaten by integrated teams, by University of Oklahoma and Notre Dame. There was a massive problem in Austin when UT started a black quarterback in the early 1980’s. Again, read your history. If I was a rival coach of Mack Brown, I would use this incident to reflect on a racist atmosphere. Further, your infatuation with UNC in basketball should be tempered by its racist past. UNC did not integrate until the early 1970’s in basketball. The first recruit was a JC player, Bob McAdoo. UCLA, Notre Dame, Texas Western and other national powers had recruited African American players for several years by that time. Additionally, do not say that what the UT player did was not that big of a deal. It was a very big deal. Finally, what happened to UNC in the NCAA last year? I guess that it played a team with better, though not as highly recruited players. How are the players from UNC’s last national championship team doing in the professional ranks. Raymond Felton is the second string point guard. Have a good day.

 --lplog@bbarr.com

A) North Carolina's first black player was not Bob McAdoo. It was Charlie Scott.

Then head coach Dean Smith was the first coach to intergrate the ACC and he was also brave enough to sit in on lunch counters with other blacks during the human rights struggle.

Before you try to condeme Tar Heel basketball please get correct information about Coach Smith and the many positive things he did to improve race relations in the South.

The fact some Carolina players are not NBA all stars is nothing new. College success does not always translate to the pros. It did not for Steve Alford, who led Indiana to a national title or Mateen Cleaves who was a great point guard for Michigan State. Sean May was a terrific college player, the fact he has not become an All Star player does not take away from his on court success at Chapel Hill.

It's sad you find joy in Ray Felton being a backup point guard.

Sometimes I wonder about the type of people who send me emails.

Q) I'm from Oklahoma. Born and raised mostly there. So it drives me nuts to see all the anti Oklahoma stuff I read in the papers here. I understand though when OU beats the Texas teams how one would hate them however. But to write about Alabama being more deserving of the #1 spot makes me wonder...really? really? New dawg has gotta be from Alabama to write that. Like you said it is way to early in the polls to care, but come on. You said Alabama beat Arkansas so they aren't feasting on cupcakes. What has Arkansas done this year? NOTHING! Eeked out 2 victories by a total of 5 points and didn't match either of their first two games scores between their last two losses. Total offense last two games is 25 points and first two games scored 28. Alabama did play extremely well against Clemson in the first half...but they didn't do much in the second and if Clemson had wanted it should have come back. They had to fight to the end to get Georgia, but Georgia has been begging to get beat most of the season. When you only get 3-2 in a conference game...you are not gonna make it. Oklahoma has played Cincinnati which their only loss was to Oklahoma. Didn't they win like 9 games last year? They are a respectable non conference game. What about Washington? They used to be something to sweat for a non conference game. And TCU? Come on. They gave Bob Stoops 50% of his home losses in his career! Like that stat? If Alabama and OU both win out...who do you think should be #1 to end the season? Before the bowls start? Sorry it is kinda lenghty and run onish...lol. Leon Foster

 -- eleonfoster@yahoo.com

A) It's not ant-Oklahoma rant. Maybe you should try and read it without a complex that the world is against your team.

After 5 games and who both teams have played Alabama should be ranked #1.

Q) Aunt Vennie also told me about how the masters used blacks to rat out the other blacks, they called them house niggers, of course we had some like that in my days, we called them uncle toms, I am an eighty three year old disable Veteran That fought in four different wars for this country, I have a feeling that you have never did anything for this country, you like so many other news people wouldn't even stand up to your greedy bosses when they wrecked the free press, that's the one time you had a chance to serve your country and you didn't, that's what I call unpatriotic, Any American have the right to refuse to homer the flag or dislike the National Anthem , that's not what these items are about, by the way young pup don't you dare to attempt to use us black soldiers to take away some black man's freedom, if you knew anything about history you would remind people how the military exposed a number of black soldiers to syphilis, in Alabama and refused to treat them, they were used as test rats to learn how much damage the disease could cause. The lady Engel a journalist for the Star Telegram with her stupid comments tried to punish Howard, but she was smart enough to state that in this country a person have the freedom to be stupid, and say whatever they please about this country and the National Anthem or the Flag, This is America, Why don't you get some info, on the very rich that's destroying this country financially , Oh that's right if you did that you would be out of a job, wrap that flag around your stupid nose, get the two by four out of your eyes before trying to get the splinter out of some one else's , you are what the communist call a fellow traveler.

A) I call it like I see it. Deal with it.
