Newy,
Good job today in the FWST with your "In My Opinion - Happy Trails Tex" comments . . . much better than your cohort Gil Lebreton, with his Smear Campaign of Texeira earlier this week, making him out to be a greedy great satan. Like you, I don't think it was all about the money with Texeira . . . I think he just wanted to WIN. Knowing that can never - EVER - happen here with Cheapskate Tommy Hapless Hicks at The Helm, what's wrong with wanting to move on somewhere to a place where there is HOPE? Hope for what all athletes play for - a Ring? That will never happen here, and Tex knew it, so why smear him after the fact like Lebreton did? Since when is WANTING TO WIN a bad trait for an athlete to have anyway?
Hapless Hicks . . eight years (8 YEARS!) as Ranger owner . . . won-loss % under Hicks for the past 8 years = .472
New York Yankees, #1 Market, #1 Payroll, 26 Titles
vs.
Hapless Hicks, #5 Market, #26 Payroll (after dumping Tex, Lofton, and Gagne), 0 Titles
Ray Buck nailed it earlier this week too . . . all Hicks wants is cheap "seeds" and cheap "prospects". Just like there's a reason nurseries sell more PLANTS than seeds . . . there's a reason why PLAYERS win titles and prospects do NOT.
But Hapless Hicks will keep selling the prospects, selling the seeds . . . with no hope of actually winning anything ever, and Texeira knew it.
Hapless Hicks is a Loser . . . "Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride".

No Newy, no malicious e-mail. Just understanding of typical T-Sip bandwaggoning we usually receive from most of the Star Telegram staff writers. I reluctantly agree that Durant deserves the Big 12 MVP, but you have definitely got to put your $1.99 longhorn mug down and ease up on the burnt' orange kool aide if you think Barnes deserves the Big 12 Coach of the Year. Gillispie has taken a sub-par sandlot program and made them national contenders in 3 years. As well as, win over a often football biased college board. The Ags should have swept the longhorns last week, but the tournament is where it counts. Good luck to your longhorns in Lawrence today. I think they are going to need more than Durant and your mug of kool aide to pull this one off.

The award is the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 season.
I would have voted for Barnes, for this season.
Billy won the award...more for what he's done over three years.

Dear Mr. Scruggs,
I totally agreed with your article concerning Tim Hardaway. His remarks were hateful and uncalled for. However, I was quite surprised to see your own bias displayed at the end of your article when you referenced Hardaway's possible future as a "right wing conservative talk show host". Aren't you painting with a very large brush? I listen to a number of the local conservative talk shows to which I assume you are referring, and I have not heard any of these hosts express any bias against homosexuals or any racial bias either for that matter. If they had, I am sure it would have made the papers and they would have lost their job. In fact one host has a gay brother which she references on a regular basis.
You may know of a right wing conservative host who has expressed a bias, and if so, please name him or her, but don't condemn everyone because of your own bias. Playing by your rules, may I assume all NBA black players share Tim Hardaway's bias. Because apparently all conservative talk show hosts must be cut from the same cloth. I really do get very tired of seeing people labeled a racist, homophobe, etc. just because they differ politically or hold a conservative viewpoint and I was very disappointed to see you go there because I enjoy your columns and sportscasting so much.
Sincerely,
Denise Dillow

This is taken from Rush Limbaugh's web site.
RUSH: Tim Hardaway was on a radio show. Tim, I wish you'd called me before you had done this. He went on the radio with a portswriter-turned-radio-talk-show-host. I guarantee you you're not going on with a sportswriter or a sports radio guy, you're going on with a left-wing social activist. Tim Hardaway, who's retired from the Miami Heat... I think we've got the sound bite here someplace. Yeah, we do. It's #14. Grab audio sound bite #14. I'd rather have him say it than paraphrase it. He was on with a host named Dan LeBatard, on a radio show in Miami yesterday, and he was asked at the end of the interview about this ex-NBA player who came out as gay, and this is what Hardaway said.
HARDAWAY: You know, I hate gay people. I let it be known. I don't like gay people. I don't like to be around gay people. First of all, I wouldn't want them on my team. I think the majority of the players would ask for him to be traded or they would want to be traded. I'm homophobic. So, yeah, I don't like it.
RUSH: Well, that's the next candidate for rehab: Tim Hardaway. What is it that these people don't understand about this now?

I have watched your sports program since you have been on the air and have enjoyed it. I was reading your article in the Saturday Star Telegram about Tim Hardaway and I felt you were right-on about him. BUT you failed to complete your article without revealing a serious bigoted opinion of you own. I consider myself a "Right Wing Conservative" as you chose to call the talk show hosts that you undoubtedly have a hatred for. I listen to them and have never heard anything derogatory toward gays. I would ask you to look in the mirror when it comes to writing about bigotry because it appears you have a bias toward people who hold different values and political opinions than your own.

MY TWO CENTS:
In honor of Black History Month, the local media designates black journalist to write Tim Hardaway's epitaph.
This part-time writer for the local newspaper stated, "Tim Hardaway's hateful rant...could kill his broadcasting career." He (black journalist) begins by stating, "I used to do a weekly radio show with Hardaway, and I'll tell you right now I like the guy. He (Mr. Hardaway) use to butcher the English language in a way that had us all rolling because we couldn't figure out words he'd use like "mastify."
This opinion goes on to say, "(Mr.) Hardaway may have a career as a right-wing conservative radio host or a part on the TV show Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Preston Burke's brother..." Where was this black journalist when Jeremy Shockey called Bill Parcells a 'homo'?
In a recent interview, John Amaechi admits, "Finally, someone (Mr. Hardaway) who is honest." That is more than I can say for someone of African-American decent who reportedly laughs at another black man, making a fool of himself before a listening audience. Then, qualify that with "I like the guy!" I would say to this journalist, "Why don't you let the public know your true feelings." At least, Mr. Hardaway spoke his.
One thing Mr. Amaechi and I can agree on: 'honesty' is the key in any dialog. Therefore, if, Mr. Hardaway is being honest what does it say for those who would vilify him for his beliefs. Hypocrites. That seems to be what Mr. Amaechi is saying!
Finally, if this black journalist truly liked Mr. Hardaway; couldn't he have kept this opinion to himself. Simply because Mr. Hardaway admitted his mistake. And, that there are plenty of other journalists willing to put pen to paper, in this matter. So, all I have to say to this black journalist: be careful who you step on, in order to achieve what you perceive to be success; because your paths may cross again. Thanks for listening.

This guy is Conspiracy Brother. If you saw the movie Undercover Brother you'd know the character Dave Chapelle played.
This is the guy who thinks Quincy Carter was run out of the NFL but won't talk about how he couldn't handle his substance abuse problem.
But he reads my "part time" work every week....then sends out a long winded email to 50 reporters who don't care.

YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!!
The silent majority are SICK AND TIRED OF THE Lame Stream Media anointing the FAGGOTS of the world.
Sodomy is a sin. PERIOD.
FAGGOTS ARE SINNERS IN THE BASEST SENSE OF THE WORD.
WHY DO YOU SUPPORT THEM, OTHER THAN BEING JUST ANOTHER POLITICALLY CORRECT IDIOT???
YOUR COLUMN TODAY EXPRESSED YOUR IGNORANCE.
Oh, yeah, Newy, please let us know your educational background.

My education is posted on the web site under my bio.
Since you want to talk about sin, just tell me the scripture in the Bible so I'll have it for my own reference.
And for your question, "Why do I support them?"
I don't support Tim Hardaway's hate against a possible gay teammate. If you want to hate a guy because he's wronged you personally or he's just a selfish person or and out and out jerk....fine.
But to hate a guy because of his religion, skin color, or sexual preference is silly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newy,
I normally never respond to articles in the paper. I do feel this article and the last few days of blasting Tim Hardaway is a little unfair. If you go back and listen to the interview you will find out Tim Hardaway gave a very good and civil first answer but the interviewer would not accept his answer. I think there are a lot of people today that are getting very tired of the gays being cram down our throat and that we must accept it . Have you noticed the agenda from the Hollywood liberals on every T.V. show including Channel 5 . I did not like the use of the word "HATE" but it is not right for you and the media to try and ruin a person for their personal beliefs. Don't think being gay is just an innocent life style . They have been forcing themselves on straight men and children for generations.
Another problem I had with your article is comparing it to the oppression of blacks. I think that is a different situation entirely. To go long with that issue. Why do we not have a white history month, White chamber of commerce, Why does a city council candidate that belongs to an all white country club be asked to resign by the media, Why does a popular sports announcer who describes scientific findings that the physical characteristics of a black man could be the reason for them excelling in sports be removed from the face of the earth.
I am not very good at explaining myself but I do look forward to your eloquent response. I do enjoy your sports show.
Tommy

Tim used the word hate. Go back and read what he said. Nobody in the media tried to twist his words.
As for your white history month comment. Blacks, Hispanics and other minorities simply wanted the system that was set up by whites to recognize their accomplishments which were forgotten or ignored for years.
It's like the lame argument I've heard some white people say, "Why do you have BET? There is no White Entertainment Network?"
For years MTV didn't play black videos and even today, you won't see certain artists like Gerald LeVert or Anita Baker played on MTV, thus a network that catered to the audience was born.
I get tired of having to answer some of the same arguments like Jimmy the Greek over and over again. Try to educate yourself more by reading books then maybe you'd understand. The book, "Why Black People Tend to Shout", by Ralph Wiley might be a great start for you.

Q)
I read with interest your column on Tim Hardaway and his rant on gays. We both agree it's pretty stupid to say such a thing but I do have a problem with you calling him ignorant. A fellow is honest and says what he thinks and is labeled ignorant. Isn't that just as bad as saying "I hate gays?" Isn't it bigotry to label Tim that way? It isn't ignorance. It's a personal feeling. I don't like the gay lifestyle. Having been there and done that I'm not ignorant of what goes on. People are repulsed by it. Don't they have that right? Is lying better than telling honest feelings? MUST folks agree with homosexuality simply because it has become politically correct?
Note; I'm not approving of what Hardaway said.
Next; Why is this a black/white issue? You bemoan the fact that his comments come during National Black History month. What does that have to do with the issue? Did you know that I didn't look at Hardaway as a black basketball player? It is the SAME with you. I don't see you as a black sports reporter. I see you as a sports reporter. Isn't that what you WANT? When will you folks begin to SEE that when YOU stop reporting it as black and white, America will also quit seeing it as an issue. All I heard during the Super Bowl week was how it was a precedent that a black coach would become a Super Bowl champion. I don't see either of them as black coaches but rather as coaches.
Think about it!

Sorry, you are wrong. I'm black first...a sportscaster second.
I get phone calls every week from people who remind me of that.
So until you walk in my shoes, you can't tell me how to feel about issues of color and sports. I live them.
In fact last month I got a call from a white man who told me I was nothing more that a N***** on TV. So jump off that high idealistic horse you are on. I live in the real world.
Tony Dungy is not a coach who happens to be black. If that were the case Dungy would have had a job five years before the Tampa Bay Bucs hired him.
