Q) Tony Romo said after the game that it took him and the coaches three quarters to figure out what the Ravens were doing on defense and that was why the offense played so poorly for the first three quarters. I guess that I am missing something! I thought that all of the highly paid coaches(who have access to all of the video in the world which is available on the Ravens) were supposed to prepare the Cowboys players for what the Ravens would do in certain situations. The fact that this did not happen leads me to believe that the Cowboys need to evaluate their coaching staff and make a heck of a lot of changes for next year. I just saw the replay again of the last long run by the Ravens. The tackling was totally pathetic. A team that performs as they did on that run does not need to be in the play-offs. When do you think that Jerry Jones will fire Wade Phillips?? I have been a huge Tony Romo fan. However, his performance this year(and the performance of Brad Johnson) lead me to believe that the Cowboys need to spend an early draft pick on a quarterback in the 2009 draft. Graham Harrell could be a possibility. I realize that he is the product of a "system offense". Obviously he can throw the football. After all, that is what pro quarterbacks are paid to do.

 --DRoach4761@aol.com

A) It is clear Tony Romo regressed this season. You'd be crazy to trade away a guy who's made the Pro Bowl 2 out of his 3 years starting in the NFL.

Graham Harrell is not the answer. He has to prove he can go under center and take a snap because he never does it at Texas Tech. Most of those system QB's have had a hard adjustment to the NFL.

Coaching is your issue. Did Jason Garrett make Romo better? Did Wade Wilson make Romo better as the QB coach? I would say no.

Could Mike Holmgren make Romo a better player? He coached Steve Young, Brett Farve and Matt Hasslebeck to Super Bowls, so I say yes.

Wade Phillips is the Lindy Infante of head coaches. He is a great guy, but he's only a coordinator.

Q) Scruggs is correct when he says that school presidents and athletic directors don't always have that much pull when it comes to selecting and hiring head coaches. The alumni have the money, and as in almost every other aspect of life, the Golden Rule usually applies, as in " He who has the gold, rules." School's athletic programs are there to make money. The more a program wins, the more money they make and schools certainly should have the right to hire those coaches that THEY BELIEVE will win the most and therefore bring in the most money. All that aside, let's look at a few other facts (which you can look up, just like I did, if you wish): As of 2005, there had been 19 Division 1 A black coaches . The winning per centage of these 19 coaches was a very poor 34.4 per cent and an overall record of 340- 648. Is Scruggs even willing to consider the fact that a lot of these black coaches just maybe can't recruit and/ or coach very well? I will guarantee you that in today's world, a coach who consistently wins and fills the stadium is and will be welcomed with open arms, even by the racists in the fan base, yes, even at Mississippi State. If Croom, who had five years at Mississippi State to prove what he could do, was a good recruiter and head coach, he would still be there. If he had won, the fans would welcome him. No question, there are white coaches who probably get to stay at some schools longer than they should, and Charley Weis at Notre Dame immediately comes to mind. However, the seemingly never-ending cries of racism by people like Charles Barkley and Scruggs do get old when they never want to look at or discuss the records of black coaches. Dave Waldrop 600 Ridgewood Circle Hurst, TX 76054 (817) 498-7397

 --davewaldrp@sbcglobal.net

A) Mr. Croom was the SEC coach of the year last season at Mississippi State. His record last year was not good and he should be criticized for not winning.

But understand this, Miss. State is the WORST job in the conference.

As Charles Barkley pointed out, when black coaches get jobs they are usually bad schools with probation problems or recruiting issues. Like the job Croom got.

Name the schools that had black coaches since 2005? Buffalo like Turner Gill? New Mexico State, a dog program Tony Samuel got. How many of those schools were BCS schools?

Only Note Dame, Michigan State, Miami, and Washington were "good" jobs in my opinion.

Ty Willingham was not given a chance at a fourth year at Notre Dame. Every other coach was. So why flip the script on him? Weis went to two BCS bowls with his players.

Washington was right to fire Ty him after the season, he didn't win.

But let's not act like there is an even playing field. You are living in your own world if you believe that.

Q) Newy, you are sounding more like Bob "Race" Sanders every day. That aint a compliment. ST reader Dan

 --Dgabbert@galnc.com

A) I love Bob Ray Sanders. He's a proven columnist and you seem to keep reading his work.

Q) Dear Mr. Scruggs: I read your opinion column in this mornings Star-Telegram. I agree with your basic statement that Turner Gill was not given a "fair shake" by Auburn, and it probably will come back to haunt them by their choosing Mr. Chizik as their head coach . He has certainly done nothing to prove his metal as a coach, but Mr. Gill seems to be on his way toward being recognized as an outstanding coach. However, I was appalled by one paragraph in your column. Your reference to Our president(yours and mine) was a cheap shot of the worst kind. To compare the president to an unsuccessful, unknown football coach reaches the lowest level of poor judgment. No president(Bush or Obama) should be disrespected in that manner. You owe your readers and your president an apology. Your disdain for President Bush has nothing to do with the fact that Mr. Gill was treated unfairly by a fumbling bunch of Auburn alums. Sincerely, Pat Weatherford

 --kwroos33@sbcglobal.net

A) An apology. As George H.W. Bush used to say, "Uh..not gonna happen."

G.W. Bush has the lowest approval rating EVER. I'm not the only one who thinks the guy has done a poor job.

The truth is what it is.

Q) Let us begin with a few definitions. Webster defines: Ignorance Noun 1. The lack of knowledge or education. Willful Adjective 1. Done by design; "the insult was intentional"; "willful disobedience". Mythology Noun 1. Myths collectively; the body of stories associated with a culture or institution or person. I usually check out your columns and expect a good point or two, and perhaps a chuckle. While I see the point you seek to make regarding Auburn/Chizik/Gill (but see Jason Whitlock http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/8959530/Gill-needs-to-find-program-that-fits-him ), I am concerned about both the needless and incorrect comment you felt necessary to throw in about the 2000 election. Despite what ever your opinion of President Bush may be, as set out by several news sources (see CNN's report -- no friend of W's -- http://archives.cnn.com/2001/ALLPOLITICS/04/04/florida.recount.01/ ), the 2000 election was rightly won by the President and would have resulted in a W win had the Florida ballots continued to have been counted according to Al Gore's suggested counting standards (have not found the KXAS report online just yet, but I'll keep looking). I sense that had Charles Barkley not spoken out about Gill, you would have felt, as a person growing up as a "Tide fan", that Auburn got what they deserved (much as I thought the same when Texas A&M hired Coach Fran away from Alabama). I encourage you to stick to sports, stay away from politics, and avoid mythology (urban, or otherwise). Nonetheless, keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing your next column. I graduated from UTA and SMU, so I have no "dawg" in the Auburn/Alabama fight. John K. Vaughan Attorney at Law 530 S. A) Nice loooooong email John.

Brevity counts. Use it next time.

Happy Holidays

Q) Newy, Since you felt it necessary to take a shot at President Bush in your recent column, here are two for you: I haven't seen anyone as amoral as Obama crash the Presidency since - no one. No President is as amoral as the abortion (murder) and gay rights supporting Obama. I haven't seen columns as mediocre as yours since - Jan Hubbard starting covering the Mavericks. Happy Holidays Newy - I'll keep reading your articles! Steven Dalton

 --stevendalton1@charter.net

A) Mr. Dalton,

Abortion, like it or not, is the law. Mr. Obama didn't make law, it was passed in the 1970's.

I am not wrapped up into Gay rights. I don't care what people do in their personal lives because I'm too busy trying to enjoy my own.

Mr. Bush has the lowest approval rating in history. It's not like he's done a great job in his 8 years. Just look at how bad the economy is.

Amoral is lying about WMD's to start a war. Torture is amoral. Mr. Bush was behind that stuff you know.

You enjoy your Holidays and thanks for taking time to read and email. You made me laugh. Who knew a throwaway line about a mediocre president would get you riled up.

I love it.

Q) first you are so stupid you do not even know how our electoral process works. secondly Bush was awarded nothing. he won (a bad choice maybe but then look at the clown replacing him) so get over it crybaby wimp. as to thinking turner should get the job 3 years is nothing to automatically put him first in line for such a job as auburn and that is coming from someone who would like to see the guy advance but in due time and if he keeps up the good job he has done so far. so get off your racist high horse you coward and try writing something worth being read. after all look how stupid you make people that hire you based on race first look. grow up and learn how life really is and take a look at your pathetic self in the mirror and decide to be a positive force instead of your hateful negative self. now go away you bore me. Geary Beeman

 --g.beeman@att.net

A) I love the name calling. When you can't put together solid points just call someone "stupid".

Nice.

I take joy in knowing you took time to read my work, find your computer and bang out an email.

I don't need you to agree with my work. Some do, some don't, but if I get you to react, good or bad, my job is done.

Q) Just wanted to say how good your piece on Auburn was today...spot on! I'm going to look up The Boondocks and watch/listen to the wisdom of Uncle Ruckus. Take good care and thanks for speaking the truth! Russell

 --doctorelleven@gmail.com

A) We all know an Uncle Ruckus.

The Boondocks is greatness. It is truth TV.
